I Like Your Smile
There is a greater connection to be had.
I never could take myself seriously. That hasn’t stopped me from trying. I’ve been fascinated with my reflection ever since I can remember. I thought highly of myself at times. Although those reflections change from year to year, my eyes look the same. And when I stare into them, I connect to something.
I see the past, flipping through the pages of my life. Moments growing up with family and friends, old neighborhoods and homes with younger versions of me. More recent pages flip by with my wife and children. The happiness and sorrows surround me like a gust of wind.
Then something looks back!
I blink and disconnect.
It’s just me in front of the mirror. I scan my face, making sure to avoid the eyes. Was something watching me? Does it see me—the real me? What do I do? No more hiding now.
What a relief.
This is where I’m supposed to be.
There is a greater connection to be had. One that doesn’t hide our real selves. Why live anywhere else? Surely not in the reality formed by scrolling words or videos on a screen, pulling you away from the mirror. There is no time to look at ourselves in such a world.
There is more to the world than what is digitized. Our memories and our feelings are inside us. There is something that knows our thoughts, our past and our future. It’s the only thing that knows the real you.
Stare into the mirror and connect to a greater power. Unleash that person.
“I like your smile,” I say to my reflection in the mirror. It smiles back when I burst into laughter. I shake my head and walk away.
Only God could love the real me.
Peace.
